Nightlight Privacy Policy

Nightlight is an iOS app from the team at GOACTO. Parents use it to record bedtime stories and book readings so their kids can play them back. This policy explains what happens to the information in the app. The short version: your recordings stay on your device.

What Nightlight stores

  • Your recordings. The stories and book readings you record are saved on your iPhone or iPad. They are not uploaded to us or to any cloud service.
  • No account. Nightlight v1 does not ask you to sign up or log in, so we don't hold a name, email address or password for you.

Permissions Nightlight asks for

  • Microphone (needed to record). Nightlight uses the microphone to record your stories. Recording doesn't work without it.
  • Camera (optional). Used to scan book barcodes. You can skip it and still record.
  • Notifications (optional). Used for reminders. You can turn them off at any time in your device's Settings app.

Crash and error reporting

Production builds of Nightlight use Sentry to report crashes and errors so we can fix problems. When something goes wrong, the app sends Sentry an error report, along with a sample of performance traces. File paths are redacted from these reports, and recordings are never sent. Nightlight has no analytics SDK.

Book search and barcode lookups

When you search for a book or scan a book barcode, Nightlight sends the search text or the barcode number to Open Library (openlibrary.org) to find book details, like the title and author. No recordings or audio are sent. As with any web request, Open Library can see your device's IP address. Open Library is run by the Internet Archive; see the Internet Archive terms of use.

What we don't do

  • We don't receive or listen to your recordings.
  • We don't sell your data, and we don't share it with advertisers.
  • We don't run a cloud copy of your recordings.

Kids and Nightlight

Nightlight is made for parents and caregivers. Parents make the recordings, and kids listen to them. Kids aren't asked to create an account or enter any personal information. Because recordings may include your voice, your child's name or other family details, they stay on your device under your control.

Backups

Nightlight has no backup service of its own. Your recordings may be included in your device's own iCloud or device backups, which Apple manages.

How to delete your recordings

  • One recording: delete it inside the Nightlight app.
  • Everything: delete the Nightlight app from your device. This removes the recordings stored in the app.

If recordings were included in a device backup, that backup is managed through Apple, not through Nightlight.

Changes to this policy

If we add new features, like accounts or cloud backup, we will update this policy before those features go live, and change the effective date above.
